Message	I would say the diff has excessive play in it. Unless the diff bushings are shot and that is what you are hearing clunking. Wedge a pry bar between the diff mounting ears and the bracket and see if it moves. But from what you describe moving the tire back and forth, it sounds like the play is internal.
